Thanks for this summary. I've been leading a Bible study on the Sermon on the Mount for 20-30-somethings, and the reaction to Jesus commanding "Do not store up treasure on earth" has been very strong. As Wesley said in the sermon on that passage (http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umhistory/wesley/sermons/28/),

"But how do the Christians observe what they profess to receive as a command of the most high God? Not at all! Not in any degree; no more than if no such command had ever been given to man. Even the good Christians, as they are accounted by others as well as themselves, pay no manner of regard thereto. It might as well be still hid in its original Greek for any notice they take of it."

I'll be providing the full text of On the Use of Money (http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umhistory/wesley/sermons/50/) as well as your summary notes as a reference for others. Thanks!

I don't disagree with the basis of the conclusions of the research but I believe he overlooked a very important factor; The leadership of the Christian parent in teaching their children.
Moses in preaching to the children escaping from Egypt said take heed of what you have seen less it shall be forgotten and teach it your children and to your children's children.
Proverbs states " train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old , he will not desert from it.

I don't know the rates but I would expect that a large number of the Christians in the churches today were trained as a child by a Christian parent. I don't believe that training is in the family life style today where both parents work.

John, people that have never shared the companionship with the same dog for a decade or more just can't understand the abyss that is the by-product of their passing. They are confidants, companions, and love without reservation. When they look up at you with those eyes that are as deep as the ocean, the look of understanding all that you are going through is priceless. To raise one from a puppy, nurture it like a child, train it, love it and be loved by it is a wonderful blessing! Been there, done that!. You have my deepest sympathy in her passing.

If you aren't already a AAA member I urge you to become one. They have a trip to the Grand Canyon called "Rails to Rim" that Bob and I did a few years ago. It includes a train trip from Williams, Arizona to the Grand Canyon and back to Williams. There is a huge motel that is the base for your train trip and a marvelous restaurant that serves 3 buffet meals a day with very good food. Included in the fee is 2 nights in the motel, buffet meals for the 2 days, the train trip (complete with a train robbery!). Plus you can walk all over Williams and there's a nightly "shoot-out" in downtown Williams. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. We drove from here to Williams and back, seeing a lot of the same route we took the first time we went to California in 1962. A lot has changed in the scenery since then. Hope you get to go regardless of the year.

I am so sad to hear that Reagan is gone. I still have the pictures of my son, Stefan, playing with Reagan out in the yard at that little church that you had in Decatur. The pictures are my favorite ever of my child. Reagan had a wonderful life and couldn't have had a better best friend in you. I will pray for your loss and for the healing of you and your entire family during this time of loss. Not everyone realizes, but a pet becomes like a child/friend as you watch them grow and experience life.
